A long-term Jericho Project resident, who has lived at our Harlem site since 2004, has celebrated over 20 years of sobriety. Throughout his recovery journey, he attributes his success to identifying and overcoming challenges related to specific influences in his life.

While maintaining sobriety, he gained employment in a maintenance role with Broadway Community, Inc. from 2007 to 2014. In 2014, he was hired by the leadership at Broadway Presbyterian Church, where he has thrived, advancing from an entry-level position to a senior role in maintenance. He remains employed there today, taking pride in his accomplishments, including consistently paying his rent on time.

This quality of life, grounded in sobriety, was tested on May 10, 2023, when he experienced the painful loss of his partner of sixteen years. Despite the profound grief, he stayed focused on his recovery, drawing strength from his work and the friendships he’s built at Jericho Project. Known for his humility, respect, and resilience, he continues to inspire us all by overcoming life’s challenges with grace.

This quarter’s Mission Moment highlights our HUD-funded Rapid Rehousing (RRH) Program, which primarily serves young adults and also extends support to Veterans who do not qualify for our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. The program provides financial assistance, supportive services, and housing placements to help participants quickly transition from homelessness to housing stability.

Here is a story from one of the young adults we have served:

A young adult was referred to the RRH program by an LGBTQ youth support organization. After leaving a difficult family situation in 2017, they faced homelessness. Known for their resilience and soft-spoken nature, the participant maintained stable, full-time employment at a local restaurant chain. Admitted to the RRH program on June 9, 2023, they were successfully housed by June 15, just days later, in a shared apartment with other program participants. Through hard work and determination, the participant has managed to save over $27,000. Their goal is to continue working and saving toward purchasing their own property in the near future.

In 2017, this individual moved into a Jericho scatter-site apartment in the Bronx, starting a new chapter on their path toward stability and recovery. Originally from out of state, they had built a stable life before facing a series of challenges, including struggles with mental health and a period of homelessness. An enduring passion for the arts, however, inspired them to seek new opportunities, ultimately leading them to New York City.

After spending time in temporary shelters, they connected with Jericho Project’s Office of Special Programs, where staff members provided encouragement and hope, helping them move into stable housing. This supportive environment reignited their sense of purpose, motivating them to join Jericho’s Resident Advisory Council (RAC) and become an advocate for their community.
Over the years, this individual has found spiritual community, reengaged in personal interests, and even traveled internationally for a writer’s retreat—a milestone in their journey. Their resilience through health challenges, including recovering from a significant stroke, highlights the strength and determination that has carried them through. Grateful for the support from Jericho staff, this participant’s story demonstrates the life-changing power of compassionate housing and community support.
